A Documentary Film About Art, Culture, and Creative Legacy on the South Coast
Seeds of the Southcoast is a documentary-style short film exploring the rich creative spirit that has shaped the South Coast of Massachusetts for generations. Through cinematic storytelling, archival imagery, interviews, narration, music, and visual art, the film will illuminate the deep cultural roots and artistic influence of a region whose creative impact extends far beyond its shoreline.
Inspired by the symbolism of the dandelion in the Southcoast Artists Index logo, the film follows a narrative arc that mirrors the life cycle of a seed: Seed, Roots, Growth, Flowering, and Spreading Seeds. Each chapter reflects both the evolution of the region itself and the artists who have emerged from it — painters, musicians, writers, performers, designers, filmmakers, craftspeople, and cultural leaders whose work continues to shape communities locally, nationally, and globally.
The film will feature interviews with artists, historians, journalists, cultural advocates, educators, and community voices who can speak to the unique relationship between the South Coast and its creative identity. It will explore how the region’s industrial history, immigrant communities, working waterfronts, architecture, and social movements helped cultivate generations of artistic expression and innovation.
At its core, Seeds of the Southcoast is about legacy, inspiration, and creative continuity. It aims not only to preserve stories that deserve to be documented, but also to inspire future generations to recognize the value of art and culture as essential to the identity and growth of a community.

This project is being developed through the Southcoast Artists Index with SMG Productions as both a celebration and historical record of one of New England’s most vibrant and often overlooked creative communities. The Artists Index collaborates with the New Bedford Whaling Museum's Common Ground Project to collect and share the interwoven stories of the South Coast's creative community.
