Welcome photographer Michael Morris to In-Focus Podcast Number 101. In this special episode, Michael shares the legacy of his great-grandfather Manuel C. “Mal” Oliveira.

Mike is the owner of Michael T. Morris Photography and has been a professional photographer for the past seven years. He was our guest on Podcast Episode 91. He’s pictured here with his great-grandfather.

Mal Oliveira (1908 – 2003) was a prolific and multi-talented artist. He was also The Artist Index’s host, Ron Fortier’s private painting instructor while during his high school years. Says Ron, “The lessons I learned are with me and he has remained ever-present in my studio when I paint, to this day.”

Most of his work is signed MAL OLIVEIRA or MAL C. OLIVEIRA. He was born in Pico, Azores, and immigrated to America in 1912 as a child. Mal spent most of his life in Dartmouth, Massachusetts.

Mr. Oliveira was a painter at Concordia Boat Yard in nearby Padanaram Village. A well-known artist in his lifetime, his work is part of the New Bedford Whaling Museum’s collection, as well as in many private collections.

His artistic work life included Pairpoint Glass, Hallmark Greeting Cards, and included the private art classes he taught in his Dartmouth studio. He was a man of many media including watercolor, serious works on velvet, oils, acrylic, pottery, and ceramics as well as scrimshaw, jewelry, and so much more. He executed more than 1500 oil paintings alone during his career.

Michael speaks about his great-grandfather with The Artist Index’s host, Ron Fortier, who delves more into his life, work, and future ambitions. This episode was recorded with Zoom post-pandemic in 2021.

We will soon begin to offer the option to our guests of recording their podcasts in our studio at the Spectrum Marketing Group in Howland Place or via Zoom depending on the circumstances of the pandemic.

Although there seems to be an end in sight for the COVID-19 Pandemic, we will continue to podcast remotely, assisted by Zoom, to accommodate our guests’ schedules and to allow them to remain in the comfort of their homes.

The whole concept of The Artists Index and the journey we are on is are still in the making and very organic. If you would like to be a guest or, have a suggestion, please let us know!
