About the Posters in the Series…

Ten specially selected fine art poster reproduction prints of Gallery X vintage exhibition posters mark the wrap-up of the Gallery X Documentation Project. The project was the first phase of a larger agenda and collaboration that began with the overwhelming task of scanning the entire thirty-year-plus Gallery X archives of news clippings, flyers, photographs, and posters.

The scanned documents are archived with The Artists Index, and we are seeking funding to mine the collected data to include in The Index, our long-hoped-for scalable, searchable, and shareable database. This information will be combined with the scores of artists who exhibited their work at Gallery X over the past three decades and data collected from The South Coast Artists Index podcasts.

On May 14, 2026, in cooperation with Gallery X, as a part of AHA! Night, we exhibited the selected posters from a collection spanning more than thirty years. Each poster is a visual artifact of the energy, experimentation, and community spirit that have defined Gallery X across generations.

Fifteenth Annual Art Raffle – 2004 – Selected to reflect the history of this annual event and to remind viewers that the annual art raffle is both a social event and a consistent fundraiser.

An Exploration of Queer Art, Gender, and Identity – 2007 – Selected to illustrate the gallery’s consistent DEI efforts, before it was popular, to consider and to include everyone in the South Coast’s creative community.

A Public Hanging – 1990 – Selected to reflect the history of the annual event and to remind viewers that the name was recently changed to reflect the increasing awareness of the meaning of the term

First Night 99 at Gallery X – 1998 – Selected to reflect how Gallery X has continued to be central to and included in many annual community events.

La Soul Renaissance – 2003 – Selected to reflect and acknowledge the diversity of the South Coast’s creative community and how many communities, artistic disciplines, and genres are consistently represented.

A Public Hanging Fifteenth Annual – 2004 – Selected again because it reflects the continuing history of this annual event, to showcase the artistry of the poster art, and to remind viewers that the name was changed to reflect the increasing awareness of the meaning of the term

Reading the Past – 2000 – Selected to reflect one of the many well-represented artistic disciplines throughout the history of Gallery X.

Richard Vanasse Retrospective – 2004 – Selected as a reminder of the individual contributions of Gallery X members and the importance of celebrating their lives, art, and humanity.

Sex at the X – 2008 – Selected as a reminder of the wide reach and reflection of Gallery X membership and supporters.

Whaling Country Showcase – 2008 – Selected as a reminder of how Gallery X honors the past as it creates its own legacy by providing a platform for a wide scope of visual, literary, and performing arts.

Some Background…

The Gallery X Documentation Project Podcast Series was created to document Gallery X’s history and the scanning project. The project’s goal was to digitally archive the entire Gallery X collection of documents, including news clippings, posters, flyers, photographs, and more, and uncover the stories they hold. Read more about it and listen to the eight-episode podcast series featuring key individuals who have been affiliated with the Gallery from its origins in 1989 until today –  here.

The Artists Index is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to documenting, promoting, and connecting the creative community across the South Coast.
