Any photos, news clippings, video or audio files, personal anecdotes; or any information you would like to contribute to The Artists Index Website archives about the SWAIN SCHOOL OF DESIGN, during your time there or otherwise, is appreciated. We will store your contribution until we can include it in our database or, write an article about the artist(s) as part of our mission of “Putting Artists in Their Place for History!” PLEASE NOTE: Partners & Collaborators – [as of 07-01-21] We are working in collaboration with the New Bedford Whaling Museum’s Common Ground project to transcribe, all our podcast episodes from the first to the most current, digitize them, and archive them in the Museum’s database in perpetuity. • SWAIN SCHOOL OF DESIGN

There are many phases in the existence of the SWAIN SCHOOL OF DESIGN. Those who attended in the 1970s were part of a student body of only 100 students. The school reached a milestone at the May 1970 commencement when twelve students earned their Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees. They were the first in Swain’s history. The faculty at that time was comprised of David Loeffler Smith, John Osbourne, Severin Haines, Dick Dougherty, Russell Daly, and Alphonse Mattia. Jacqueline Block, Benjamin Martinez, Jim Bobrick, Tom Corey, Nicolas Kilmer, Robin Taffler, Leo Kelly, and Marc St. Pierre were also faculty members. The Swain School merged with Southeastern Massachusetts University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts (SMU-CVPA) in 1988. The former Swain property and buildings were sold and students moved into the SMU-CVPA) satellite campus at 1213 Purchase Street. The facilities were leased by the University from the City of New Bedford until 2001. Southeastern Massachusetts University and the University of Lowell were incorporated as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth into the new University of Massachusetts system composed of the Amherst, Boston, and Worcester campuses in 1991 to form the new University of Massachusetts system.
